Want to Read saving…. The theme of man’s inhumanity to man will return with a vengeance by the end of the novel, but for endote moment the most memorable scene is of a man buried alive in an oubliette and slowly turned from rational human being into beast.
However he isn’t very likeable but he is not meant to be. In a work that strives to do for werewolves what Stoker’s Dracula did for vampires, Endore’s werewolf, an outcast named Bertrand Caillet, travels round seeking to calm the beast within.

Interestingly the werewolf in question, Bertrand Caillet, is actually something of a secondary character in his own tale, as it is told from the perspective of his adoptive father Aymar Galliez. I was finishing up Stoker’s “Dracula” and decided to research the “Dracula” of werewolf stories.
I don’t want to ruin too much of the story here, but let’s just say there’s something in it for everyone, including those that found Fifty Shades of Grey lacking in real cruelty and also those who are fans of Boccaccio-esque descriptions of Catholic clerics getting their boogie on.

There were a lot of things to like about this book, but by the same token, there were a lot of low points. An a vast fear. I had high expectations from the story, after glowing praise from a reliable reviewer on a different forum, and I was not disappointed.
The transformations are also kept mysterious, with the exception of one scene where he feels his tongue flattening and extending into a more lupine form. Later, in a moment of weakness, Bertrand will seduce his mother and she will conceive.

The story of Bertand is then recounted, how he was conceived when his mother was raped by a priest and pqris he was born on Christmas Eve, a bad omen according to local superstition. The characters were strong enough to carry the story, but the author for some reason thought it prudent to keep stepping away from the plot to fit in random facts that barely related.
The werewolf mayhem is not as well written as the creepy passages in Stoker, limiting the scare factor of this novel. He perverted the act of love by making it an act of violence and now, instead of leading his flock to eternal life, he leads innocent beasts to their deaths. When I was starting my October classic monster literature mini-series, I wanted to read the source material for some of the very popular creatures of parris.
The sources for Frankenstein and Dracula were easy enough to discover, but what’s the equivalent for werewolves? And the most hideous display of cruelty in the name of science over superstition comes from Dr.

For the wealthy, war is an opportunity to become even more wealthy. Endore uses the werewolf narrative to depict and comment on the fervid political climate of France in the nineteenth century. It suffered from writer rushing to the ending syndrome.

I have nothing to do with superstitions. It wasn’t particularly effective even then. Why, that phrase was the beginning and the end of all mysticism.
The Werewolf of Paris by Guy Endore
This is a damn good book which just happens to have a werewolf. Were wolfie catches pseudo uncle and sophie doing it! I really love werewolf novels. His upbringing interested me because while reading this book I was sure that it was a French author being that the book is deliciously grim with French sensibilities and steeped in revolution that, toward the end, came across as more of a history of Paris during one of the French Revolutions than a book about good old murderous werewolfing.
Check date values in: There is no beauty, only ugliness. He is a man, clad in garments and is walking about, busy in the affairs of the city. Bertrand flees to Paris after his assault on a prostitute, his incestuous union with his mother, and his murder of a friend in their home village.
Aymar takes the boy and the mother under his wing, to be endoree in the oaris, away from the corrupting influence of the big city.
